Achamore Gardens

Hospital Garden

The Malcolm McNeill  Garden (Formally the First Garden, The Tile Garden and Athlone Bay)

It is within this part of Achamore Gardens, that we would like to recognise the work of previous Head Gardener Malcolm McNeill. If he had not taken layers of many of the Horlick Rhododendrons during his latter years, the collection may have become lost.

There were no records of what was taken or where the plants were within the garden, but prior to my taking over the mantle, he ensured that the Horlick rhododendron were at least labelled.

I would like to re-design the site so that a representative of all remaining Horlick rhododendrons would be planted with an interpretation panel. The Summerhouse (A replacement for one that smashed by a fallen tree in 2007) would have some interpretation to explain who Col. Horlick was and some notes on his rhododendron breeding.

In the last 5 years over 20 mature dangerous and potentially dangerous trees have been felled and removed from here alone.
