Achamore Gardens

North Triangle

The Malcolm Allan Garden

This compartment garden was named in honour of the Head Gardener (1918-1970) who took on the responsibility of the running of the garden after Kitty Lloyd-Jones had left. Malcolm was a gardener at Achamore for 52 years.

According to the collection of slides we have that Col. Horlick had taken, it shows this section of the garden as being a nursery, where Horlick kept his rhododendrons growing on before planting out.

Over the years many of the plants have grown, established and now have nearly hidden this open area that houses a good collection of Horlicks' own breeds.

Notable mature specimens of Cladrastis sinensis, Pieris forrestii, Prunus avium 'Plena', Sorbus hupensis, S. reticulata subsp. pekinensis and a mature collection of rhododendron.

Sadly, this intimate garden is in need of renovation and we hope to address this soon. For the time being, we are battling with the extensive bramble growth.

During October 2010, the Japanes maple that is the centre piece of this garden gave such wonderful autumn colour and the fact that we cleared a few big sycamore from the entrance to the garden, allowed the Acer palmatum to act as a beacon.
