Summer Holidays on Gigha

We all know how much summer means to kids - but imagine being on Gigha for Easter and one of the hottest summers for a long time.  Tori and Georgia Allan have described their experiences - read on!

Holiday on Gigha, Easter 2006

I enjoy my holidays on Gigha and this holiday has been the best so far. This Easter holiday I have been to a Gigha sports thing and I had lots of fun .we played football, golf, dodge ball and tig. I have also been to the gardens and looked at the peacocks.

There has been an Easter egg hunt as well. I went to that and only came out with two eggs! Other people got a lot more than that! It was good fun and I enjoyed it very much.

When we came to Gigha the minister gave my Gran two videos for us to watch. They were The Wind in the Willows and The Jesus Quest. After watching The Jesus Quest my sister, her friend and I decided to make a model of the Easter Story. When we took it into church on Easter Sunday the minister liked it very much. She liked it so much she put it on the Communion Table.

When I am at Gigha my Gran always has something fun for us to do. This time we made a Gigha tartan kilt for my teddy. He enjoys being on the Island as well!

I have been to the tea in the hall twice this holiday and the tea is a nice thing to be at in the afternoon. I sometimes help my Gran to bake. There are also lots of things to buy. My gran bought me a book of Kakuro puzzles which is like Sudoku but harder.

I have also been to a soup and sandwich lunch in the village hall. I was helping at the sales table. The soup was delicious and the sandwiches were tasty. The next soup and sandwich lunch for the church is hoping to be in July.

Holiday on Gigha, Summer2006

This holiday has been lots of fun. I arrived on the 16 th and I am leaving on the 30 th . First of all I went swimming and I was jumping of the catwalk I had lots of fun. I have been swimming nearly everyday. On the first Wednesday there was a soup and sandwiches. I was one of the waitresses. We raised lots of money and sold lots.

At the end there was a raffle, my ticket won two bottles of wine and as I am only eleven I could not get them. My granny had won a box of biscuits so I swapped her for the wine. Then I was allowed to pick something from the sales table.

There was a raft race on Saturday. It was fun although we did come in third last.

I was a photographer the other day there. We went down the gardens and got over thirty photos. I met the cat Cameron and I found one peacock feather.

Easter Holiday

Gigha is a relaxing place and also has things for children to do. Some of these things we do when we come to stay with Granny. This holiday there was Gigha sports in the village hall including golf, buzz, dodge ball, football and shinty. I learnt shinty for the first time and it was very good and I enjoyed all the games very much.

There was also an Easter egg hunt in the gardens on Easter Sunday. There might be another one next year. It was good this year and I found 2 eggs. We had to follow clues to find them. The giant rhubarb was the first place to go then we went to the dragon, then the bamboo maze. After that we went to the viewpoint and then to the pigsty. Then it was the Malcolm Allan garden and then the south drive, where there were lots of plants with pink flowers. Then we went to the pond garden but we weren't meant to go there till later, so we went to where the wooden train is and found eggs there and a clue that led us back to the pond garden where the hunt finished.

I went to Tarbert Farm to ride the horses. I didn't ride them this time but just groomed them instead and looked at the Shetland ponies and lambs.

I played with my friends and we made a model boat and tried to sail it. It worked in the bath but didn't work in the sea but I got very wet trying to sail it.

There was a soup and sandwiches and I was a waitress serving people. It is only on occasionally and this time it was on a Saturday.

I made a model for church and it turned out pretty good. I made it with my sister and my friend. It was a model of the crucifixion. We made it from plastercine and sticks and paper and paints.

Summer Holiday

We are now back for another holiday. We came two weeks ago on Monday 31 July. I went swimming on the first day of the holiday 10 minutes after I came. At the soup and sandwiches I was a waitress with Tori, Bethany and Serena. We raised a lot of money and sold an awful lot. We helped with the baking. We made chocolate muffins! Yum! Yum!

There was a raft race and I was on a raft with Serena and her family and my sister. We came in third last. Even though we didn't win it was great fun. Our raft was called the “Front Room” and it was decorated as a living room, with a vacuum cleaner and a table with cookies, flowers and sprite. There were also two soft toy dogs to represent Gemma and Xenia .

The weather has been so warm that we have been swimming every day and jumping off the catwalk. We have been going crabbing and we have caught lots of crabs but we released them back into the sea when we were finished. We have also been canoeing and kayaking.

We have been riding on Jodie and Lucan. We helped Bethany to paint jumps for Jodie.

I have had a good holiday this time as usual and I hope to come back again soon.
